The Science of Sound Healing

Sounds healing works by calming the nervous system, entraining brainwaves, creating physical resonance in the body and gently shifting emotional states all of which support the body’s natural healing process.

Psychoacoustics effects- certain sounds invoke positive associations, safe memories or emotional release through aesthetic or emotional release or symbolic resonance – this is related to music therapy where tone, tempo, and timbre affect emotional processing, memory and even trauma integration

Group field coherence/synchrony – in group settings, participants often entrained breathing, synchronized here rhythm and empathic resonance – a known phenomenon in neuroscience and social psychology

Resonance and vibroacoustic stimulations – sound waves are vibrations and when directed into the body via instruments they create subtle mechanical oscillations in tissues. Vibroacoustic therapy uses low frequency sound to relieve muscle tension, improve circulation and reduce pain perception (gate control theory)

Brainwave entrainment neural synchronization – repetitive sound patters from bowls or gongs can entrain brainwave activity, especially shifting from beta to alpha and theta states- associated with calm, meditation and creativity. This is measurable by EEG studies and seen in binaural beat and neurofeedback research.

Chakra System

The chakra system is an ancient energetic framework that maps the body through seven primary energy centres; each associated with different aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. When balanced, these centres support our sense of vitality, clarity, and connection. When imbalanced, we may feel blocked, fatigued, or emotionally off-centre.

Crystal singing bowls are tuned to specific notes that correspond to each chakra. When played, they emit pure, sustained frequencies that resonate deeply through the body, creating a sense of coherence, restoration, and stillness.

Sound + Frequency + Resonance

Crystal bowls produce frequencies that interact with the body in a few keyways:

Resonance

Every organ, cell, and energy centre in the body has its own natural frequency. When a bowl is played, its sound creates resonance, a harmonic vibration that awakens or amplifies the corresponding area in the body. This is why certain notes may feel more intense or soothing, depending on what you're holding.

Entrainment

The brain and body naturally sync to consistent external rhythms. This is known as entrainment, a powerful principle in sound healing. When you listen to crystal bowls, your brain waves shift from active states (like beta) into more restorative states (like alpha or theta), helping the nervous system settle and your energy system realign.

Coherence

When the chakra system is out of balance, we may feel scattered or disconnected. Sound offers a non-invasive, somatic way to bring coherence back into the energy field, gently tuning you back into yourself.

Chakra Location Area of Life
Root Base of the spine Grounding, safety, survival
Sacral Lower abdomen, sex organs Creativity, sensuality, flow
Solar Plexus Upper abdomen, digestive system, adrenals Power, confidence, motivation
Heart Centre of the chest, heart, lungs Love, compassion, emotional integration
Throat Throat, mouth Expression, truth, communication
Third Eye Between the eyes, brain Intuition, clarity, vision
Crown Top of the head, brain Spiritual connection, consciousness

Not all bowls are played in a strict scale, some sound healers use harmonic sets, frosted or alchemical bowls, or custom tunings that match what the body intuitively needs in the moment. What matters most is intention, presence, and how the sound is received by the individual’s system.

Why It Works

Crystal sound isn’t about "fixing" the chakras, it’s about inviting them into harmony, gently nudging the body’s energetic blueprint back toward balance. In a sound bath, participants often report physical release, emotional insight, and a deep sense of peace, not because the bowls are doing the healing to them, but because the sound is creating the conditions where healing becomes possible.
